"The Novelty of Worship: Rest"
Speaker: Pastor Kevin Cox
Central Passage: Deuteronomy 12:1-32
Outline:
- Thesis: Worshipping the God of the Bible is novel. He sets the terms, and His terms give us rest and peace, a peace that the world has not known since before Adam plunged the world into sin. Proper worship is a restoration of how we rightly and prosperously relate to God and His creation.
- The Substance of the Commands
- Be Careful to do these commands (12:1; cf. 12:14, 28)
- Destroy the pagan places of worship (12:2-3); you shall not worship your God like that (12:4).
- Remember the sanctity of life (12:16, 23-25).
- Seek out the place that Yahweh will choose; go there (12:5, 11a, 13, 26b)
- Connection: Don't forsake the Levite (12:19)
- The Point of the Commands: Rest (12:1, 4-7, 9, 12, 18, 20, 28)
- Conclusion:
- What are you resting in? Where do you find your rest? What are the bags we bring with us to worship that cause us to be restless before God?
- Be annihilated by God (Psalm 119:89-91)
- Be renewed in your rest.
